Monitoring Glaucoma: The Key to Preventing Further Vision Loss

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes for blindness in people over age 60. If you are over 60, it’s important that you regularly see your eye doctor and if you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma, stick to prescribed treatments to help protect against vision loss. Unfortunately, once you lose vision from glaucoma, it can’t be restored, so preventative measures and annual screenings are important.

At Tyson Eye, we’ve developed a Glaucoma Program to help our patients prevent additional vision loss. Subtle changes to your eyes, which may not be noticeable to you, can be detected and addressed by our team of expert eye doctors.

Regular Monitoring & Exams

As part of our Glaucoma Program, you may be asked to see your doctor every three months, depending on the stage and severity of your condition. At these appointments, state-of-the-art diagnostic tests will be conducted, and the results will be compared with previous test results, to see if your condition is stabilized or worsening. It is essential that we do everything in our power to protect your vision.

What You Can Do

It’s important that you follow the appointment regimen your doctor recommends, so that you can have your eye pressure checked frequently. You also will need to take any prescribed medication as directed at all times, stay informed on your condition, and be sure to contact the Glaucoma Program team at Tyson Eye if you have any questions or concerns.

Treatment Options

Glaucoma is normally treated with a regimen of eye drops to help keep the pressure in your eyes at a normal level. In the event drops are ineffective, or a patient has challenges complying with the regimen, there have been great advancements in minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS).

Additional surgical procedures that can help treat glaucoma include Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation (ECP), and Laser iridotomy (used in medical emergencies).

Talk to your doctor about your options and what treatments may be best for you.
