How to Keep your Eyes Healthy During the Winter

Even though our Florida winters are much milder than those in the North, colder temperatures, less humidity, and indoor heating can all contribute to eye problems such as dry eye or eye inflammation. Learn more about how you can prevent or alleviate these problems and enjoy the winter season.

Dry Air = Dry Eyes

As the temperatures drop, we turn on our heaters in our homes or workplaces, which not only dries the air but also our skin, eyes, and hair. Symptoms of dry eye include: excessive watering, burning, itching, pain, redness or even the sensation of having something in your eye. Exposure to cold or windy outdoor air can make matters worse.

Who Gets Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes can affect anyone, but it tends to be more common in the fall and winter. Additionally, people who wear contacts are more prone to dry eye, as are peri- and post-menopausal women, and people over the age of 65. Left untreated, dry eye can cause blurry vision, irritation, and could even damage the cornea.

Tips for Preventing Winter Eye Problems

  • Stay hydrated. Drinking lots of fluids can help you keep your eyes moist.
  • Use a humidifier. Run a hot or cold-air humidifier during the day, when your eyes are open, at home or in the workplace to add moisture back into the air.
  • Try artificial tears. Simple saline drops or tear gels can lubricate your eyes, increase comfort and preserve your natural tear layer.
  • Blink more. Sometimes when you are working on complex tasks, like on the computer, you’ll blink less, which dries out your eyes. Try to remember to blink frequently when you are in the zone.
  • Wear sunglasses outside. Sunglasses will help block the wind which can also quickly dry out eyes. Also remember to wear sunglasses if you head up North to avoid snow blindness, glare and UV reflection.
