How Often Should You Change Your Prescription Glasses?

There’s no hard and fast rule of how often you need to replace your prescription glasses, although most optometrists recommend you do so every one to three years. If your vision hasn’t changed and your glasses are in good condition, you may be able to keep the same pair for a long time. Still, there are a number of factors that should make you consider getting new glasses.

Vision changes

Once you pass the age of forty, you may notice your vision changing more than it did in the past. If you are wearing your current prescription glasses and you notice that things are getting a bit blurry or you have to squint to see properly, that’s a sign that you may need an updated prescription. Also, if you feel relieved when you take your glasses off, that may indicate they are putting a strain on you.  Be sure to see your optometrist every year for your regular exam and go sooner if you are having any difficulty seeing properly.

Damaged lenses

If your lenses are scratched, cracked, damaged, or the coating is coming off, that’s another sure sign that you need new glasses. Scratches and cracks won’t go away and can impair your vision or simply be an annoyance. If your frames are still in good condition, you may be able to just order replacement lenses.

New lens technology

Maybe you have reading glasses, computer glasses, distance glasses, and sunglasses and it can start to feel like you are constantly changing glasses based on the situation. With new advancements in lenses, progressives are better than ever and can let you easily transition from reading to distance activities without multiple sets of glasses. You also may also consider a special lens coating that blocks blue light, especially if you spend a lot of time on electronic screens (cell phones, tablets, computers) to help protect your eyes.

Comfort and style

If your old frames aren’t comfortable on your face, or you simply want a stylish change, a new pair of glasses can help you look and feel your best. There are a wide range of unique frames available to fit your specific face shape.
