Have Cataracts? Find Out if You’re a Candidate for Advanced Intraocular Lens

Cataract surgery can help improve your vision from the effects of cataracts, but with new advancements in Intraocular Lens (IOL) technology, it can also help correct your vision from things like astigmatism.

What is an IOL?

An IOL is a lens that is implanted in your eye during cataract surgery to replace your natural lens which has become damaged and clouded from a cataract. An IOL is used to replace your damaged lens with a clear one. Standard IOLs are designed to provide clear vision at distance only, which means glasses are needed for reading, computer work, or similar tasks.

What Are Advanced IOLs?

Advanced IOLs are designed to go a step further by improving some of the limitations associated with standard IOLs.

Advanced IOLs address specific needs; correcting vision at near, intermediate, and distance, astigmatism-correcting IOLs are used to correct near-sightedness or far-sightedness. Other IOLs provide optimal night time vision for those people who often drive after dark.

Customize Your IOL with the Light Adjustable Lens

Tyson Eye offers the latest innovation in advanced IOLs – the Light Adjustable Lens. This is the first and only IOL that is implanted during cataract surgery, and then adjusted specifically to meet your vision requirements after surgery.

Once you have healed from surgery, you and your doctor will work together to determine a custom prescription that helps you to see your best. These IOLs are made of photosensitive materials that are adjusted by simply exposing them to UV light. After surgery, you can expect 2 to 5 light treatments – each lasting approximately 90 seconds – to create the most precise lens on the market. Our patients report amazing results from this procedure, listen to some of our patient’s stories here.

Are You a Candidate for Advanced IOLs?

There are a number of factors to determine if you are a good candidate for advanced IOLs, but generally speaking, if you qualify for cataract surgery, you will most likely qualify for advanced IOLs.

To be a candidate, you must be experiencing some vision problems, diagnosed with cataracts, and told you need surgery. The best candidates are those who want to be able to see clearly without glasses during distance activities – such as golfing, driving or watching a movie, as well as close-up activities, such as reading a book or working on a computer.

If you’ve had previous eye surgeries or procedures, or suffer from macular degeneration, you’ll need to talk to a doctor to make sure advanced IOLs are right for you.
