Wouldn’t it be great to have less dependency on glasses or contacts to see clearly? If you’re in need of cataract surgery, new advancements in Intraocular Lens (IOL) technology could make that possible.
An IOL is a lens that is implanted in your eye during cataract surgery to replace your natural lens which has become damaged and clouded from a cataract. A standard IOL is intended to improve your distance vision, but now there are a number of advanced IOLs that are designed to improve your near and intermediate vision as well – often reducing the need for prescription glasses or contacts.
There are many types of IOLs available to address specific needs including multifocal IOLs (correcting vision both near and far), astigmatism-correcting IOLs, and monofocal IOLs. Advanced multifocal IOLs are designed to provide you with a full range of vision that can allow you to see clearly up close or far away, which could reduce your need for glasses.
Tyson Eye offers the latest innovation in advanced IOLs – the Light Adjustable Lens. This is the first and only IOL that is implanted during cataract surgery, and then adjusted specifically to meet your vision requirements after surgery. Once you have healed from surgery, you and your doctor will work together to determine a custom prescription that helps you achieve your best vision. These IOLs are made of photosensitive materials that are adjusted by simply exposing them to UV light, which changes your prescription. After surgery, you can expect 3 to 5 light treatments – each lasting approximately 90 seconds – to create the most precise lens on the market. (Watch our video on the Light Adjustable Lens)
There are several factors to determine if you are a good candidate for advanced IOLs, and the experts at Tyson Eye will discuss those in detail with you during your consultation.
To be a candidate, you must be experiencing some vision problems, diagnosed with cataracts and told you need surgery. The best candidates are those who want to be able to see clearly during distance activities – such as running, golfing, driving or watching a movie, as well as close up activities, such as reading a book or working on a computer.
If you’ve had previous eye surgeries or procedures, or suffer from macular degeneration, you’ll need to talk to a doctor to make sure advanced IOLs are right for you.
