5 Tips for Healthy Vision

Healthy vision is one of those things that many people take for granted, but not being able to see clearly or having eye issues can really impact your quality of life. It’s important to do everything you can to ensure that your eyes are healthy, so you can continue doing all the activities you enjoy most, such as reading, traveling, golfing, watching movies, hiking, and more. Here are five tips for healthy vision.

1. Talk to your family

You know the saying, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. If a close family member has eye disease, you may be at a higher risk. Talk to your family members about their eye health to see if they have eye issues or conditions that are hereditary. Eye problems like age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma are all known to have a genetic component, so if someone in your family has or is experiencing issues, you’ll know to seek preventative care and/or early treatment.

2. Live a healthy lifestyle

Your sight is impacted by your overall health. Issues like high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and other conditions can increase your chances of certain eye diseases, which left untreated, could lead to vision loss. Eat a healthy diet with lots of greens and fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids. You should also stay active, try to maintain a healthy weight, drink plenty of water, and don’t smoke.

3. Wear sunglasses

UV rays can cause a lot of damage to your eyes and your vision. You may wear sunglasses just to block that annoying glare but it’s important to wear sunglasses whenever you are outdoors and choose lenses that offer 100% UVA/UVB protection. You may also want to ask your eye doctor about getting UV protection lenses for your prescription eyewear.

4. Use protective eyewear

Unfortunately, many people lose or damage their vision each year due to accidents. Invest in protective eyewear to use whenever you are playing sports, mowing the grass, using power tools, or in any work situation that requires safety goggles.

5. Get regular, comprehensive eye exams

The most important thing you can do to help ensure healthy vision is to get regular eye exams with an expert eye doctor you can trust. Many eye issues that cause vision loss may have few to no symptoms in the early stages. An annual eye exam, with dilation, can enable your doctor to identify potential issues as soon as possible, sometimes before you even notice anything is wrong.
