Looking for eye care tips for Florida winters? It may surprise you to learn that caring for your eyes requires different routines as the seasons change. For example, in the winter, your eyes can feel the unfortunate effects of cooler, drier weather if you don’t protect them. If you think living in the sunshine state exempts you from taking special care of your eyes in the cooler months – think again. As we all know, winter in Florida still brings some chilly, dry air and even freezing temperatures. Fortunately, we’ve got some great tips for keeping your eyes healthy this winter season.

Avoid direct heat sources

If you’re one of those people who bring out the space heater as soon as the temperatures drop below 70 degrees, try grabbing a sweater instead. Heaters put out warm, but also very dry air and can lead to dry eye symptoms when you expose your eyes to too much direct heat.

Moisturize the air

The dry air of winter can sap the moisture from your eyes. So, moderating the indoor temperature helps your eyes retain that moisture. If it’s not possible to turn the heat down, try running a humidifier to add moisture to the air.

Feed your eyes appropriately

Generally speaking, what you put in your body affects your eye health and everything else! Incorporating plenty of omega-3 based fatty acids into your winter menu can help keep your eyes lubricated. Tuna, mackerel, and halibut are all great sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

It’s safe to say staying hydrated is a good habit all year round! In winter months when your eyes suffer from a lack of moisture, it’s especially important.

Keep screen time to a minimum

One of the reasons too much screen time can cause dry eye symptoms is less blinking. When you’re staring at a screen for longer periods of time, you blink less, reducing tear production and ultimately moisture. In the colder months, we tend to stay indoors more, so be mindful of the amount of time you spend staring at a screen.

Protect your eyes from UV rays

Many people get a false sense of security in cooler months about the sun’s harmful UV rays. Never skip wearing protective eyewear if you’re going to be spending time outdoors no matter what the temperature.

Adopt a hands-off approach

It’s hard not to rub your eyes when there dry and itchy. Try to avoid it if at all possible and keep your hands as clean and sterile as you can by washing them often. The less bacteria on your hands, the less likely they will make their way into your eyes.

A winter in Florida is a pretty wonderful thing most of the time, even when the temperatures are a little cooler than usual. Get out there and enjoy it but take care of the things you view the world with while you’re at it!
